The Undeniable Street View Campaign Unveils the Reality of Ukraine's Struggle

On 24th February 2023 we marked a grim milestone – one year since the start of Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion and brutality against the people of Ukraine. In the days that followed the invasion, a terrible pattern emerged that remains to this day – the clear targeting of civilian areas by Russian forces. Yet miss-truth, Russian denials and growing global indifference persist. One of the biggest weapons of war will always be The Truth. So, to mark one year since the terror began, in partnership with UNITED24 (President Zelenskyy’s initiative), Voices of Children, Nova Ukraine, and Vostok SOS, (a collective of non-profit organisations making a real difference on the ground), we launched THE UNDENIABLE STREET VIEW. The world’s first war zone shown in Street View*, working in the exact same way as Google Street View - this site gives a powerful way to see what the Ukrainian people are having to face. It’s made from over 100km of raw Street View film shot across 6 Ukrainian cities with Ukrainian Street View photographer Mykola Omelchenko, often under threat of attack. (*Google’s Street View doesn’t allow uploads of areas potentially showing violence). The Undeniable Street View invites everyone around the world to walk the streets, “bear witness” for themselves and see up close the targeting of civilian areas and infrastructure. A before-and-after feature in certain streets shows how things looked pre vs post invasion. As a unique document of the crime, the site and imagery within it has been submitted as evidence to the Office of the Prosecutor General in Ukraine (warcrimes.gov.ua). Ultimately, this site shows something no one should accept. It is through history’s witnesses that humanity has been held to account. And every single person who visits the site becomes one more witness.
