A prominent Portuguese rally co-driver, Jorge Amorim, 53, vice president of the Clube Automóvel do Centro, lost his life on Wednesday, 15 February 2017 while carrying out a reconnaissance test on the route of a special stage of the Rali Serras de Fafe. Jorge Amorim was co-driving to João Vinha in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, replacing Vinha's usual navigator Cristiano Queiroga who was injured and did not participate in the testing session. While traveling along the Estrada Nacional 234, between the villages of Santa Comba Dão and Mortágua in the district of Viseu, central Portugal, about 15h15 João Vinha lost control of the car which left the road and fell into Rio Cris river.

Slightly injured, João Vinha was pulled from the water by rescuers, and taken to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário in Coimbra. His co-driver Jorge Amorim was unable to leave the car and drowned.

An engineer by occupation, Jorge Amorim was married and lived in Coimbra, Portugal. He was an active participant in rallies of his country since the mid-1990s, taking several class victories. Racing alongside Paulo Antunes from 2002 to 2008, Jorge Amorim achieved at least three outright wins.
