1974 Cold Out Tonight
Can you believe it? I wrote this on a cold night. I think I was living in a house on Hargett Street in Raleigh at the time. No central heat, and the fireplace was not near the bedroom. I could hear large rats crawling in the walls over my bed. Occasionally, they would be drowned out by the loud speakers in Raleigh’s Central Prison that was just across the street and railroad tracks from my apartment. Perfect inspirational situation.
