Maharashtra News: Onion farmers angry over central govt's imposition of 40% export duty

Asia's largest onion The Agriculture Produce Market Committee in Nashik's Lasalgaon. Which is crowded with farmers and traders is silent today as the onion farmers have announced an indefinite protest against the Centre's imposition of a 40 percent export duty on the kitchen staple.

Onion auctions had resumed for some time on Thursday after being stalled since Monday but were stopped later after the farmers claimed that they did not get the Rs 2,410 quintal as promised by NAFED, an apex organization under the Union Agriculture Ministry. Despite assurance from Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Agriculture Minister Dhanajay Munde, the farmers allege that NAFED has still not purchased the onions and they are not getting the right price for their produce.
