A journalist was shot and killed at his home in Bihar's Araria district this morning by unknown attackers, according to Bihar Police. It happened in the Raniganj Bazaar area. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed sadness and quickly told officials to investigate when he heard the news. He said, ""It's really sad how a journalist was killed like this,"" when talking to reporters in Patna.
The victim, Vimal Kumar Yadav, who was 35 years old, worked as a local journalist for the 'Dainik Jagran' newspaper, the police said. The attackers knocked on his door around 5:30 am, said his name, and shot him in the chest when he opened the door, the police reported.
Around 5:35 am, the head of the local police station came to the scene and looked into the situation. The Police Superintendent for Araria also went there. They sent the body for an examination to find out the cause of death. A group of experts and a team with specially trained dogs are at the site to help with the investigation.
First looks into the case suggest that an old fight with his neighbors might have caused this, the police said.
Two years ago, Vimal Kumar Yadav's younger brother, Kumar Shashibhushan alias Gabbu, who was a sarpanch, was killed in the same way. Vimal Kumar Yadav was a very important witness in the case. This makes people think there could be a connection between his killing and his brother's. Mr. Yadav hadn't yet spoken in court against his brother's attacker. Some people had threatened him many times not to do so.
ADG (HQ) Jitendra Singh Gangwar said it's possible that the person accused of the crime thought Mr. Yadav's words in court were really important after reading the official charges. The police will look into this, because Mr. Yadav's family has also said they think the two killings are connected.
Vimal Kumar Yadav had a 15-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter.
Opposition parties criticized the government and said this shows that democracy in Bihar is in danger. The state's BJP president, Samrat Choudhary, said, ""Bad people are free to do whatever they want while good people, like journalists and even the police, are being killed.""
The BJP leader also said, ""What happened in Araria is very sad. But these things have been happening since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's government started in the state.""
Chirag Paswan, who used to be the leader of Lok Janshakti Party and now is with the BJP-led NDA, said, ""Nitish Kumar and his friends keep saying that democracy in Bihar is under attack. But they can't even keep journalists safe."" He said this while talking about a police officer who was killed recently in Samastipur. Mr. Paswan also said, ""People in Bihar have lost faith in Nitish Kumar.
