The Savoy Orpheans recorded prolifically from the time of their formation in 1923 until the end of 1927. Debroy Somers was their first leader. On his departure in April 1926, vocalist and violinist Cyril Ramon Newton took over as musical director for nine months. Sometime during the Autumn of 1925 Billy Thorburn began to attend Savoy Orpheans' recording sessions at the HMV studios in Hayes, with new first pianist Carroll Gibbons, but it is far from clear in Brian Rust's discography which recordings actually feature Billy. That Billy Thorburn was a member of the Orpheans at this time is confirmed by his presence in photographs. He was certainly with the band when they toured theaters in 1924 - early 1925. This great recording was made in 1927. Vocal by Ramon Newton.

Jazzgirl, thank you for your appreciation! I like the Dodds version a lot too, but i agree this orchestral arrangement is brilliant - all records pianist Carroll Gibbons made were outstanding (I refer to my post of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue by the British Bert Firman Band with Gibbons as the soloist). Thank you for sending me the link to the footage! I'll definitely have to take a look.

Great song I have liked since I first heard it as a kid. The first version I heard was Johnny Dodds Black Bottom Stompers on an old Vocalion 78. I love the hot piano solo on this Savoy Orpheans version which I hadn't heard before. Thanks for posting this song I like so much! There is a very good version of a band playing this number on film from a Vitaphone short called "Night Court":

Corrie, this typically is a cheerful charleston era tune. So glad you liked this excellent version.
