Biden Administration Expands Migrant Entries

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced an expansion of its CBP One mobile app, which enables migrants to register asylum claims and book appointments for entry into the country. Under the new policy, 1,450 migrants will be permitted to schedule appointments each day via the app. Asylum seekers who arrive at the border without securing an appointment will likely be turned away. The CBP One app not only limits the number of asylum claims but also allows officers to receive advance information for screening, vetting, and determining admissibility. The app has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, with migrants complaining about its glitches and difficulty of use, and critics arguing that requiring an app for asylum claims is unfair due to the ownership of smartphones. The Biden administration views the app as a tool to streamline border operations and prevent ineligible migrants from claiming asylum.
