After a police officer in France shot dead an unarmed 17-year-old Nahel during a traffic stop in Paris last week, two fundraisers were set up. One was to support the teen’s mother..while the other was for the family of the police officer who shot him. By early Wednesday morning, the fundraiser for the police officer had raised a final total of more than €1.6 million while that for Nahel had only collected €400,000 More than 85,000 people had donated to support the police officer, while just over 21,000 had donated to support the family of 17 year old deceased’s mother. The fallout from the death, and from the wave of rioting it triggered in France’s poor suburbs, continues to dominate political debate, with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne advocating in parliament a crackdown on young rioters and their parents. The crowdfunding appeal for the accused cop was set up by Jean Messiha, a member of far-right political party National Rally and former adviser to Marine Le Pen. Yesterday, he announced that he was closing the funding account.
