A young St. Louis Cardinals fan saved his friend from being clobbered in the face by a foul ball with a sensational catch Thursday.

The Cardinals suffered a 14-0 rout at the hands of the Houston Astros on Thursday night and one of their young supporters showed some better defensive play than the players on the field.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, a foul ball was hit down the first baseline and headed into the stands.

It was flying straight into a group of fans with one young spectator standing directly in its path with his arms outstretched in the hope of catching the ball.

However, it slipped right through his fingers and looked set to thump him on the nose.

But, unbeknownst to him, his friend sat next to him had expertly snuck his arm round his back and got his glove in front of his pal's face just in time to catch the ball and stop it nailing him on the nose.

The youngster instantly earned himself new fans on the Cardinals broadcast as the announcers hailed him for saving the day as the catch was replayed in slow motion.
