Money, fame and the knowledge of English: in India, these three factors play a huge role in how society judges an individual. English Vinglish is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light-hearted yet touching and transformational journey of Shashi. Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, and teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self assured and confident woman. The film is shot mostly in New York and captures the inherent struggle of many people all over the world with the English language. Selbst ihre eigene Familie, ihr Mann und ihre Tochter, blicken ein wenig amüsiert auf Shashi Godbole , die in ihren Augen ihr Dasein als zufriedene Hausfrau ein wenig verschenkt - was aber auch daran liegt, daß sie nicht eine einzige Fremdsprache spricht, in Indien, mit Englisch als zweiter Sprache fast schon ein Ausdruck an Ungebildetheit. Dabei steckt in Shashi viel mehr, doch traut man es ihr nicht zu. Der Besuch zu einer familiären Hochzeit in New York verändert dann aber plötzlich alles. Als die mangelhaften Englischkenntnisse mittelschwere Katastrophen hervorrufen, entschließt sie sich, heimlich einen Englischkurs zu besuchen, um den Rückstand endgültig aufzuholen. Dort wird sie ernst genommen und blüht sichtlich auf - allerdings gerät sie dort auch ins Visier eines französischen Mitschülers...
