The Artwoods — Art Gallery 1995 (UK, Mod, Rhythm & Blues)
  • last year
The Artwoods originated in 1964 from the Red Bludd's Bluesicians, who were born in London in the autumn of 1963, when guitarist Derek Griffiths and Jon Lord left the Dixieland of Bill Ashton (later leader of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra). They were joined by drummer Reg Dunnage and bassist/vocalist Don Wilson, who adopted the "pirate" alias Red Bludd. When Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated's original vocalist Art Wood replaced him at the microphone a couple of months later, the band's name changed to The Art Wood Combo and then simply The Artwoods. In March 1964, Wilson left the band and was replaced by Malcolm Pool, and in May, Keef Hartley, who had replaced Ringo Starr himself in Rory Storm & The Hurricanes two years earlier, took over the drums! Under Wood's direction, The Artwoods played an energetic mix of hard rock, rhythm and blues and soul. The contract with "Decca" was embodied in four singles, the EP "Jazzin' Jeans" and the album "Art Gallery". The group disbanded in May 1967.
