Eutelsat suppresses independent Chinese-language TV station NTDTV to satisfy Beijing

New York, September 8, 2008 – Since Eutelsat cut off NTDTV’s Asia broadcast on its W5 satellite, inquiries, pleas and protests from NTDTV viewers and information freedom supporters have been verwhelming. Despite millions of homes in China relying on NTDTV on W5 for uncensored information which people are still willing to take great risks to seek, despite evidence released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) which clearly showed that the cutoff of NTDTV was premeditated and politically motivated and that Eutelsat has the technical capability to restore NTDTV, despite repeated calls and demands from politicians, NGOs, NTDTV viewers and much media attention, Eutelsat has not only refused to restore NTDTV, but also taken additional steps to stop all of its East Asia satellite capacities. Eutelsat has not provided the technical details based on which the decision of terminating NTDTV and East Asia transmission was made, has not explained the inconsistencies between what Eutelsat claimed and what RSF released, and has not resolved the contradictions in Eutelsat’s own statements.
