"Maverick" is more of an update to "Top Gun" than a direct sequel. The tale's outline is taken almost scene for scene from the original; despite significant updates to keep it current, it is still recognizably the same plot. Tom Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete Mitchell, whose call sign is Maverick, in the newest movie. He is currently a test pilot at a remote location in the Mojave Desert, where the project he is working on to build a new airplane is likely to be abandoned in favor of drones under the guise of an unachievable performance criterion.
