Branham's Elijah Stage Persona

William Branham used multiple stage personas while entertaining crowds during the Post WWII Healing Revival. During his early years as an alleged “faith healer”, Branham claimed to have received a vision by God that inspired him to hold revivals. He described that stage persona in his 1945 tract, “I Was Not Disobedient to the Heavenly Vision”. Also in that tract, Branham described touring under some other inspiration years prior, and the 1945 stage persona claimed to have a “double portion of the power to heal”.

Around 1946 or 1947, Branham introduced a new twist to his stage persona: an “angelic commission”. During this phase of his early ministry, Branham used a “Moses” stage persona. According to Branham, the “Angel of the Lord” — which he sometimes called “Jesus” — told him that “As Moses was given two signs, so will you be given two signs.” It was during this phase of his ministry that he tried to stage an Exodus from mainstream Christianity into his own cult of personality, which ultimately led to the formation of the “Message” cult. It should also be noted that during this stage persona, he claimed that the stars and planets aligned in the year 1909 to signify his birth.

Years later, Branham replaced the “Moses” stage persona with an “Elijah” stage persona, and his “Message” cult of personality still refer to Branham as “Elijah” to this day. During this stage persona, Branham changed his birth year to 1907, the day after his Elijah prototype and “Elijah prophet cult leader” John Alexander Dowie died.
