Hundreds of motorists were trapped on Interstate 95, a major highway, in northern Virginia on January 3, 2021. Many were stranded for more than 12 hours, sharing food and water with other drivers and had only their car engines to keep warm.  Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said that state and local emergency staff worked overnight to clear roads, respond to emergency messages and set up warming shelters.
