20 workers have been rescued from a flooded coal mine in central China’s Shanxi province, but two were found dead, according to Chinese state media. Hundreds of rescuers raced to save the miners after they were trapped late at night on December 15, 2021. Authorities say the mine was illegal, leading Beijing to vow a crackdown on illegal mining operations. Seven people have been detained so far. Police say they are still searching for other suspects, including the mine’s owner.
