পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঁকুড়া জেলার পাঁচমুড়া গ্রামে এই পোড়ামাটির ঘোড়া তৈরি হয়। এগুলি মূলত গ্রাম্য ধর্মীয় আচার-অনুষ্ঠানের জন্য নির্মিত হলেও, আজকাল সমগ্র বিশ্বেই ভারতীয় লোকশিল্পের প্রতীভক হিসেবে গৃহস্থালীতে শোভা পেয়ে থাকে। অল ইন্ডিয়া হ্যান্ডিক্র্যাফটস সংস্থার লোগোতেও বাঁকুড়ার ঘোড়ার ছবি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
The principal centres where the terracotta horses and elephants are produced are Panchmura, Rajagram, Sonamukhi and Hamirpur.All villages are located in Bankura district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Each place has its local style. The Panchmura-style of pottery is considered the best and the finest of all the four types. Terracotta horses and elephants in Bankura have been the creation of potters.It has been praised for “its elegant stance and unique abstraction of basic values.” Originally used for village rituals, it now adorns drawing rooms across the world as symbol of Indian folk-art. It is used in the logo of All India Handicrafts organization.
Over the centuries they have moved away from a realistic presentation to a representational presentation. Potter-artists of different regions focused on different parts of the animal body in such a manner that representation of the same became more important than representation of the entire body of the animal.The terracotta horses of Bankura are turned out in two different colours. The normal terracotta red color is obtained by letting out the smoke through the vents of the kiln after firing, and the black colour is obtained by sealing the vents and not letting out the smoke to come out. Presently brick red & black colors are also used to give a shiny look to the craft items.
