Silvany Silva Lima raises dairy cows in Brazil’s Caatinga region, where climate change and commercial agriculture have taken a toll on the biodiverse, semiarid region. Lima and other farmers have begun growing native trees on their pastures and using the fruit to generate supplemental income.

In 2008 women in the Caatinga region decided to form a cooperative of farmers from 14 municipalities to sell products grown by smallholder farms, such as umbu and a native species of passionfruit.
