River surfing is riding a wave of popularity in Missoula, Montana, a landlocked state best known for its mountains and national parks. Brennan’s Wave, the most popular and best-known river wave in the area, is a man-made stationary wave in downtown Missoula, on the Clark Fork River, used by surfers from April to the beginning of July, depending on snowmelt. Jason Shreder, owner of Zoo Town Surfers, a water sports company, believes the craze is mostly due to the accessibility of the sport itself. "You don’t need all the equipment that you need for kayaking. You grab your board, you grab your wetsuit," he says. "It’s also spectator friendly."
