From Sitar maestros Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan to Shubhendra Rao, instrument-makers Rikhi Ram and sons have served the best artists in the genre of Hindustani classical music. The story of these iconic craftsmen spans three generations. Sanjay Sharma and his wife Manjul run the Rikhi Ram outlet in Gole Market, New Delhi. They talk about what makes a good instrument-maker, the challenges in the industry and how the craft can be promoted in India.

The original Rikhi Ram store that was set up in Connaught Place is currently under property dispute and is run by Sanjay’s brother Ajay Sharma, who is also an instrument-maker.
