Viral replication checkpoint identified in cholera bacteria

Researchers have discovered a molecular checkpoint that orchestrates the replication of the two chromosomes of Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera. The checkpoint, the functional interactions of which are mediated by contacts between two chromosomes, is an unprecedented observation in bacteria, the authors say. Bacteria like Vibrio cholerae with multiple chromosomes represent up to 10% of all bacterial species. Source: Science Advances/AAAS
