At the end of 2008, the year's job losses totaled a shocking 2.6 million, the highest level in more than six decades.

The U.S. Labor Department jobs report Friday showed that after the credit crisis began in September, in December the economy lost 524,000 jobs. A staggering 1.9 million in the year's final four months.
