In a survey released by the Associated General Contractors of America, about two-thirds of U.S. non-residential construction companies plan to lay off workers in 2009 due to poor economic conditions and a decrease in active projects.

The association predicts that the layoffs will amount to a 30 percent decline in total non-residential construction employment.
According to the AGC, many of its members are hopeful that Barack Obama can convince Congress to approve his plan for investing in U.S. cities to create construction jobs through public projects.
