Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock, November 26, 1939) is an American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, and actress. Known as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", she rose to prominence as the frontwoman of Ike & Tina Turner before launching a successful career as a solo performer.

Turner began her career with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957. Under the name Little Ann she appeared on her first record, "Boxtop", in 1958. In 1960, she was introduced as Tina Turner with the hit single "A Fool in Love". The duo went on to become "one of the most formidable live acts in history".[5] They released hits such as "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep – Mountain High", the Grammy-winning "Proud Mary", and "Nutbush City Limits" before disbanding in 1976.

Turner is often referred in the media as "The Queen of Rock and Roll".[227][166] She is noted for her contralto type voice[citation needed] and her "swagger, sensuality, gravelly vocals and unstoppable energy",[228] along with her career longevity[229][230] and her much-celebrated legs.[231] Journalist Kurt Loder has asserted that Turner's voice combined "the emotional force of the great blues singers with a sheer, wallpaper-peeling power that seemed made to order for the age of amplification.
