신혼부부, 맞벌이-대출 늘었지만 주택 소유는 하락

Recent data suggests more newly married couples in South Korea have both partners working, and more are taking loans,... but fewer newlyweds are homeowners.
Of those who married in the past five years, the number having children is also falling.
Kim Sung-min reports.
More South Korean newlyweds are getting loans, but they are finding it more difficult to buy a house.
According to the Statistics Korea on Thursday, out of those who got married between 2015 and 2019, those who took out loans of between 90-thousand and 180-thousand U.S. dollars increased by 2-point-2 percentage points on-year in 2019.
Some 85-point-8 percent of the newlyweds held loans of any size,...up point-seven percentage points.
However, newlyweds' home ownership in 2019 dropped. 57.1 percent did not own a home in 2019, compared to 56.2 percent the year before.
And this comes despite the increase in newly married couples with dual incomes.
Almost half of the couples had both members working for a living,...an increase of 1-point-6 percent from the previous year.
Following lower home ownership and a higher percentage of dual income couples, the percentage of newlyweds who had children dropped by 2-point-3 percentage points,...to 57.5 percent.
Around 45 percent had one child while some 42 percent had none.
The study showed that couples where only one person works are more likely to have children, and those who own homes have more children.
With more dual income couples, the average household income for newlyweds jumped 3-point-7 percent,... to some 52-thousand dollars.
There were fewer newlyweds in 2019 compared to 2018,...reflecting an on-going downward trend in marriages.
