Nearly half of Chinese vessels fishing near the Galapagos cut off communications, Ecuador says

Some ships from a predominantly Chinese fishing fleet operating near the Galapagos Islands have been turning off their tracking systems to avoid monitoring, Ecuadorean officials said on August 18, 2020. Ecuador went on alert in July when the Chinese fleet showed up near the ecologically sensitive Galapagos. The South American nation said that after it expressed concerns with Beijing, China banned its nationals from fishing in the area from September to November.
