How to Get a Good Workout While Dealing With Seasonal Allergies Working out while dealing with irritating allergy symptoms can be tough. Here are five tips from Purvi Parikh, an allergist with the Allergy & Asthma Network, that will help make your workout routine more bearable. 1. Before stepping outside, make sure to check your local pollen and pollutant counts online. If counts are off the charts, consider moving your workout indoors for the day. 2. Don’t wait for your symptoms to flair up. Consider preemptively taking over-the-counter allergy medication. Just make sure to avoid medications that contain sedatives. You don’t want to feel drowsy during your workout. 3. Reduce potential contact with outdoor allergens by wearing accessories such as sunglasses or a hat. After your workout, immediately wash your clothes and shower to reduce the risk of any airborne allergens sticking around. 4. If your allergies are aggravated, stick to a low-key, low-impact exercise until you’re feeling better. Cardio and high-impact movements can temporarily increase inflammation and blood flow, which in turn may make your allergies worse. 5. If you find yourself still feeling wiped out, even after taking all the proper precautions, give your body a break. Sometimes the best thing you can do is get a good night’s sleep and give yourself a chance to rest so you can be ready for the next workout.
