Digha is a seaside resort town in the state of West Bengal, India. It lives in East Midnapore district and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach with gentle waves extending up to 7 km (4.3 mi) in length. It is the most popular sea resort in the West Bengal.
It is located 183 km (114 mi) from Kolkata/Howrah via Mecheda and 234 km (145 mi) via Kharagpur, this proximity has probably helped this small hamlet to emerge as a popular weekend getaway with number of good hotels and tourist lodges. Digha is connected to Kolkata/Howrah by a highway and a rail-link via Tamluk.
Originally, there was a place called Beerkul, where Digha lives today. This name was referred in Warren Hastings's letters (1780) as Brighton of the East.
Digha attracts tourists to pay a visit to the Marine Aquarium and Research Centre, housing a number of huge marine tanks as part of a noble move to inculcate awareness about marine biodiversity. A temple of Lord Shiva located at Chandaneswar; bordering the states of Bengal and Orissa is the most frequented place of worship. These are the popular spots for sightseeing in Digha.
Kolkata to Digha trains are also available and the time take to cover the distance from Kolkata to Digha is approximately 3 hours. On most days, the Duronto Express leaves Howrah at 11:15 am and arrives at Digha in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Kolkata to Digha buses are available and these are most popular as they are considered to be the most economical means of transport between Kolkata and Digha. So many government buses are providing services from Kolkata to Digha. Kolkata, it takes around 4 and half hours.
Kolkata to Digha by car is the fastest option to reach the destination. Kolkata to Digha distance of 190 km must be covered taking around 2 and half hours.
