Atmel Corp. plans to reduce its costs, including a move to cut 11 percent of its North American workforce.
Atmel has also ordered a 10-day closure for non-manufacturing employees, implemented a hiring freeze and put strict controls on all discretionary spending.
The company now estimates fourth quarter 2008 revenues will be down 12 to 18 percent from the $400 million recognized in the third quarter of 2008.
A spokesman said the cuts would impact about 275 jobs.
