Grand Rapids teachers to be laid off
In Grand Rapids, Michigan, district leaders say that about 50 secondary school teachers will receive layoff notices this month in an attempt to better handle the uncertain economy.
Even though enrollment was higher than expected, meaning more money than budgeted, administrators say they still need to curtail spending.
District spokesman John Helmholdt said there are wide disparities in high school class sizes, with some sections having up to 40 students but others with less than 20, and adjusting the staff would allow administrators to be more efficient.
