San Francisco employees receive pink slips

As part of a $71 million dollar spending reduction plan to help city and state agencies deal with a massive budget deficit of $575 million, nearly 400 San Francisco city workers will be jobless in February.
The majority of the cuts come from the public health sector. The head of that department predicts this could mean only core services will be spared.
The fire department laid off five civilian workers, and Chief Joanne Hayes-White announced her department will be able to meet its share of proposed cuts.
Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the cuts will not impact the department's fire response or emergency medical services.
