This Russian City May Be
Earth's Coldest Populated Area .
Yakutsk, Russia, can be
found in the province
of Siberia, nearly 300 miles
south of the Arctic Circle.
Records show that the lowest temperature ever recorded there
was -83 degrees Fahrenheit.
During January, AccuWeather
says Yakutsk will usually drop
to -42 degrees on average.
Despite its freezing weather, nearly 300,000 people live in the area.
The city contains lots of museums and
art galleries, and local restaurants
boast a distinct cuisine.
It is still up for debate
whether or not Yakutsk is
Earth's coldest populated spot.
Just 600 miles away lies Oymyakon, which some say holds the title.
The village, which recorded
-88 degrees in 2018, has a
population of just under 500
