NBC Universal is downsizing its workforce by 500 staffers worldwide, the latest move in the Peacock's plan to save $500 million from its 2009 budget.

The firings represent 3% of the media giant's workforce. Every division was impacted, including broadcast, cable, syndication, features and parks.

At Universal Pictures, around 70 people were cut.

The news divisions were hit particularly hard by the cuts. A specific number wasn't available, but a spokesperson admitted that the NBC News firings exceeded the 3% overall rate. Targeted staffers will be gone by January.

Cuts will be made through layoffs, buyouts, early retirements and attrition, and come as part of a flurry of industry-wide layoffs this week -- including the 850 positions slashed at Viacom.
