Dow Chemical Company announced a temporary reduction in "asset utilization," by assigning Dow employees at a Texas plant to positions currently held by contract workers.
Four thousand contract workers are employed at the Freeport, Texas Manufacturing, Research and Development Operations Center.
The company would not characterize the firings as layoffs, since the persons affected are not technically Dow employees.
The company blames a decrease in product demand for the reduction in contract staff.
While the exact amount of contract workers to be removed has not been released, Dow said the company would be "reducing the numbers of contractors on site substantially."
