MPI cutting jobs in Michigan

Mattawan, Michigan's MPI Research is conducting major layoffs this week, and inside sources say hundred will lose their jobs just before Christmas.

The news of the layoffs comes after the scientific research company announced it would create thousands of jobs with a huge expansion.

One employee told Newschannel 3 that he was given just ten minutes to pack up his desk.

"It was really just a big surprise and shock to everyone," said a long-time MPI employee who spoke anonymously. He says the harsh news came for many after an emergency meeting at MPI Tuesday afternoon.

"An hour or so after the meetings were over with, people were called into their offices and told that their jobs were eliminated," the fired worker said.

He added that 20 percent of his department was cut. If that turns out to be true, more than 360 of MPI's 1800 employees could wind up losing their jobs.
