During the Thaipusam festival in Chennai thousands of worshippers undergo body piercing and walk over burning coals to show their devotion.
According to hindu mythology, goddess Pavarthi gave her son Lord Murugan a lance to kill evil demons which is symbolised by the skewers that devotees use to pierce themselves.
At first glance it seems to be any festival with drumbeats, massive number of people and bright colours but what makes this different from any other festival are the heavily pierced worshippers.
