"White list" decision: Forecast and implications by Jonathan Miller at Japan Inst. of Int'l Affairs

As we await Japan's decision on whether to remove South Korea from its white list of 27 countries granted preferential trade status - expected to be made during its cabinet meeting in less than two hours from now - we'd like to seek perspective from an expert in Japan.

As an analyst living in Japan, studying Japan's foreign policy, do you expect the Abe government to green light Japan's removal of South Korea from its "white list"?
How much public support and media spotlight is this issue garnering in Japan? Is South Koreans' boycott of Japanese products and travels backfiring on Japan's domestic economy?
There are global concerns that if Japan were to push ahead with this move, it could initiate the economic decoupling of South Korea and Japan - which has been the glue that's long secured political, security cooperation. Are there no such concerns within Japan?
U.S. experts on Asia have pointed to Washington's role in this trade spat between its two Asian allies. American firms have already expressed concern over being exposed to negative impact as the trade row disrupts the global supply chain. Foreign policy experts point to U.S. role in order to keep the alliance security architecture between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.
