Nobody knows why 340 million private chat records leaked in China

Chat apps in China are not just for texting, you can pay for things and even order takeout from a super app like WeChat.

As these messaging services become an essential part of everyday life, Chinese people are becoming more concerned with their data security, especially after a recent leak of over 340 million private chat records.

An open database was found with private chat records from services reportedly from some of the world's biggest companies like Alibaba, Tencent, and Apple.

We to spoke Victor Gevers from the GDI Foundation, the organization that found this open database, about data security in China and what a leak like this means.
