A driver who tried to help a suspect evade arrest was shot and killed by a police officer who was being dragged down the road by his SUV.

Dramatic body cam footage has now been released by the Kansas Highway Patrol documenting the November 27 altercation.

The tape begins with two officers approaching the female driver of a car who police say attempted to evade arrest earlier in the day, in Topeka, Kansas.

Later identified to be Chelsee Retana, 26, the suspect appeared to lunge for an item near the center control console - prompting one officer to hoist her out of the car and onto the ground.

As the officers - who've not been named - attempted to handcuff her, a silver SUV driven by Jarmane Logan, 35, pulled up alongside them.

Freeing herself from the officer's grip, Retana opened the SUV's passenger door and jumped inside as it started to drive off.

Clinging onto the fleeing vehicle, one officer was dragged along the icy road for several steps before firing his weapon as he fell to the ground.
The silver SUV carried on driving at speed for two blocks but suddenly ground to a halt in the distance.

Jarmane Logan was critically injured by the bullet and was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Neither of the officers involved in the incident suffered serious injury.

Last month, Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said the Highway trooper was justified in fatally shooting Logan
The unnamed officer will face no charges in relation to the incident.

Retana fled the seen as the vehicle stopped but was recaptured by Kansas police two weeks later
She has been charged with interference with law enforcement and possession of methamphetamine.

Retana is currently being detained at Shawnee County Jail, where she is being held on a bond of $150,000.

A preliminary court date has been set for March 28.
