Baker & McKenzie is set to open its third office in the Persian Gulf with the launch of an Abu Dhabi arm later this year, according to Legal Week.

The new office will be the firm's 69th location worldwide, and will specialize in banking and finance, corporate and M&A, private equity, securities, capital markets, projects arbitration and real estate.

Former Prague managing partner Boris Dackiw will head up the office, leading a team of 50 lawyers. He will also become managing partner of the Gulf region.

Baker has had a presence in the Saudi Arabia since the mid-1970s.

The multinational firm joins a long list of US & UK firms queuing up to enter the Dubai and Abu Dhabi markets.

Last month, Berwin Leighton Paisner announced it is to open in Abu Dhabi early next year. Allen & Overy moved six partners and 14 associates to the region in September.

A number of firms have received Abu Dhabi licenses over the last year.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of, and second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a dictatorship with a poor human rights record.
