S. Korea celebrates National Teachers' Day

South Korea is celebrating National Teacher's Day today.
An awards event was held in Sejong City to recognize some outstanding teachers.
Our Kim Mok-yeon tells us about the significance of the day...
Teachers' Day is celebrated on March 15th in Korea.
The day was founded on May 24th, 1963 after members of the Red Cross youth visited their ill teachers in hospital.
It was changed to May 15th in 1965... to coincide with the birthday of King Sejong the Great, the creator of the Korean alphabet Hangul. It has since been observed annually as a day to express gratitude and respect for teachers.
One tradition students observe on this day is giving carnations to their teachers as a token of love and appreciation.
Some 700 elementary, middle and high schools out of nearly 12,000 schools nationwide closed for the day,... in a bid to avoid situations where teachers' inadvertently receive gifts that breach the anti-graft law.
"To mark the special occasion, the education ministry held an event in Sejong City to recognize nearly 3,000 teachers for their outstanding support and guidance."
"It's an honor for me to meet these respectful teachers today. Congratulations.
I will seek wisdom in creating a societal atmosphere where students can better respect their teachers and for educators to be proud of their roles and be triggered to preach more to students."
The education minister also said that her ministry is coming up with enforcement ordinances on a revised law aimed at improving teachers status, adding that it will continue to look for ways to enhance the teaching environment.
