Thousands of lanterns were lit and sent into the sky to celebrate the New Year of the Dai ethnic group in southwestern China's Yunnan Province on April 13.

The impressive video shows local residents and tourists releasing the illuminated Kongming lanterns by the Lancang River to celebrate the ethnic group marking the new year of 1381, as well as the "Songkran" which is also known as the Water-splashing Festival.

The local airport has been closed for around four hours during the event for safety reasons.
