Korea's Constitutional Court has ruled that a decades-old law banning abortion is unconstitutional.
In its ruling Thursday afternoon, the court called for the abortion law to be amended by the end of next year.
Abortion has been illegal in South Korea for almost 70 years, with a maximum fine of 1-thousand-800 U.S. dollars or a year in prison for intentional miscarriages.
Seven years ago, the highest court narrowly upheld the law when the issue was raised by a claimant arguing that it infringed on a woman's right to choose.
