Cases drag on for years; Victim suffers, convict free

The Law Minister had himself stated in Parliament that over 56,000 cases are pending in Supreme Court. With such disillusionment on the part of citizens, they often end up losing faith in the judiciary and taking law into their hands. India's court system is painfully slow, in part because of a shortage of judges. The country has about 15 judges for every 1 million people.
