LOP: Sonia Gandhi steps into political tug-of-war, process of collecting signatures of all allies on

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday stepped into the political tug-of-war between the NDA government and her party over the post of the Leader of the Opposition by saying Congress has a rightful claim over the constitutional post. Notwithstanding posturing, the government and Congress leaders understand there can't be an easy solution to the political dispute.
Despite Congress' projected readiness to take the dispute to court, the party brass understands the constitutional and political limitations in trying to make the court decide on an issue which is in the 'domain of the Lok Sabha Speaker'.
The government too realises the attempt to check-mate Congress by getting a group of other Opposition parties to jointly bid for the LOP post can also hit procedural bottlenecks.
"We are the largest Opposition party and we have a pre-poll alliance. Hence, we are entitled to get the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,"said Sonia Gandhi. Unlike other Congress leaders who have been openly talking about the party moving the court if it was denied the LOP's post on the ground that it does not have 10% of the LS strength (55 seats), Gandhi circumvented the issue saying Congress was yet to decided on a legal option. She has reasons to be cautious, a source said.
