Kolkata unsafe for women, Rape cases on rise - NewsX

Two back-to-back incidents of rape and molestation in Kolkata have raised questions about the growing insecurity for women in the city. A recent incident, where a 26-year-old woman was kidnapped and raped in a moving car on June 8, sparked off fears of whether the city has indeed become unsafe for women. The incident took place just four months after the Park Street rape case, where a woman from the city's Anglo-Indian community was raped in a moving vehicle. But, unlike the Park Street incident, the police could arrest the suspect, Mumtaz Khan, 41, within hours on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim -- the wife of an Army man and a mother of two.
