High-Meat Diets Linked to
Liver Disease Bad news for meat-lovers. New research shows that people who consume high amounts of animal protein have a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Overweight people whose primary source of protein was animal-based were 54% more likely to have fatty liver than individuals who consumed mostly plants. Fatty liver disease occurs when over 5% of the liver is made up of fat. Shira Zelber-Sagi, Researcher at the University of Haifa, via Reuters Processed meat is far worse for health, as it causes inflammation and insulin resistance that can lead to diabetes. Doctors recommend limiting red meat consumption to once or twice per week. Mediterranean-type diets with whole grains, fish, lean protein, vegetables and olive oil, are much healthier. So go easy on the bacon.
