Trump Touts Huge Jump In Support From Hispanics

President Trump on Sunday cited a huge jump in support from Hispanics.

President Trump has touted a jump in support among Hispanics to back his continuing push for the border wall with Mexico.
"Wow, just heard that my poll numbers with Hispanics has gone up 19%, to 50%," he tweeted Sunday. "That is because they know the Border issue better than anyone, and they want Security, which can only be gotten with a Wall."
The president was likely referencing a recent Fox News report which states: "Latinos are increasingly rallying for President Trump, according to data from a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll. The poll notes that 50 percent of Latinos surveyed approve of the job Trump is doing, a 19-point increase from December of last year."
While the reason for the surge in support is unknown, an Associated Press report from late December suggests it may not be surprising, stating: "The GOP's position among Latinos has not weakened during the Trump administration, despite the president's rhetoric against immigrants and the party's shift to the right on immigration."
According to the report, some polls have shown that about a third of Latino voters back the Republican party, with issues like abortion and religious beliefs playing a major role.
That said, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll has pointed out that Trump's overall rating has fallen, standing at "39 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove — a 7-point net change from December when his rating was 42 percent approve, 49 percent disapprove. And the movement has come from within key portions of his base."
"For the first time, we saw a fairly consistent pattern of having his base showing evidence of a cracking," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, told NPR. "Don't know if that's temporary — tied to the government shutdown — or a broader problem the president is having."
