There has been a sharp escalation in violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, a day after an Israeli incursion prompted deadly fighting in the enclave.

The flare-up in violence was triggered by a botched Israeli military raid in Gaza on Sunday in which seven Palestinian militants, including a Hamas commander, and an Israeli officer were killed.
The Israel Defense Forces would not give details of the operation, but said it was not intended to kill or abduct terrorists, but to strengthen Israeli security.
Israeli media reported that the operation had been to gather intelligence.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his visit to Paris, where he had been attending First World War commemorations, to consult with his security chiefs.
Palestinians have been protesting along the Gaza strip since late March to show support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel.
Israeli forces have responded to the movement with lethal fire, killing about 170 demonstrators and injuring thousands more.
Monday's violence could harm months of multilateral talks aimed at calming the conflict.
There had been apparent progress with the Egyptian- and UN-brokered talks, with increased electrical power and the influx of millions of dollars in aid.
