5G Service in 2019 This would make it the first prepaid mobile carrier to offer the next-generation wireless service. Metro, which is the recently rebranded MetroPCS, was acquired by T-Mobile
in 2013. The newly renamed carrier officially launched on Monday this week. T-Mobile is currently in the process of seeking government approval for its merger with Sprint. At the same time, it is racing against Verizon and AT&T to kickstart and spread 5G nationwide. T-Mobile previously announced that it was building out its 5G network in 30 cities this February. The carrier also signed a $3.5 billion deal with Nokia this past July, which is helping build the spectrum for T-Mobile's
5G network.
